How do I find a Vietnams Vets serial number?

I have his name (naturally) and rank, I know the name of the Navy Patrol Gunboat he was on etc – however in order to gain more information I need his number – is it possible to find it on the net, or by emailing somewhere? If not, how do I go about it – he was not related to me, but someone I loved very much for a long time. There is also a worldwide difference here because he was from the USA and I am from New Zealand.

The VA, or any govt "thingy" doesent use serial# ‘s.
    They want Social Security #"S

Do you have the name of his unit on a letter?
google that. and the name of his ship.
i dont know how to do it. Sorry.

Well; one can often locate a vietnam veteran via his unit association: if he was on a small boat we have several "brown water" vets groups.

    These guys will assist you.

As to one’s serial number, it is not that usefull as they were
changed to social security numbers around 1971 or so. But
even with a SS# the search is not any easier as people usually do not disclose their SS#’s.

I knew a few Kiwi’s in Vietnam, in the DELTA, fellow advisors, interesting and impressive. Frankly scary :-)

anyway just check out the site and look at their links

    Goodluck

For a foreigner to get that information would be difficult.

Basically, the only people who can obtain that are him, his family (in emergencies) and police.

But you don’t need his service number, you can get it, if you could, with his name, date of birth, which service, etc.

You can contact the National Archives in St Louis since they keep all the records of everyone who has served. They may be able to assist you.
