Charity muggers — “chuggers” — are paid about £10 an hour, sometimes more if they work on commission. Chuggers persuade 520000 people every year to provide a direct-debit donation to a charity, with an average gift of £7.30 a month. However, Heather Walker, of Intelligent Giving, the advice site, says people should avoid handing over their bank details on the street. “Instead, find out which charity you really like, and give via its website,” she says. “Chuggers are usually in it for the money and don’t always know much about the charities they represent.
